HIDDEN GEM

We all get the itching to go somewhere, do something but what? That is where we were a few days ago. So we decided to go visit a fort that we had heard about. We picked up my parents and off we went. What a surprise. We went to Fort Miles in Lewis Delaware. It is on the coast and it was in use during the 1940-45 war. The barracks and the guns are open to the public, you are free to wander around and look. It is an awesome sight, the bunkers are built into the dunes, they are so well hidden that it is hard to see them. My dad served in the war and he told me that he well remembers the guns. This picture was taken on top of the highest bunker, (information says that this is the highest point from Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras) looking towards the Atlantic Ocean. If you look very carefully at the picture you can spot another bunker,(look close) and see that gun barrel sticking out of it. I can just picture the soldiers scanning the ocean looking for a German Sub, with the guns ready to fire.

All up and down the coast there are cement bunkers placed on the beaches, this is were the spotters were deployed to watch over the ocean. I have always seen these bunkers but not until now have I realized their significance and how much I have taken my freedom for granted. Not any more. You should really take in this Fort. There will be an re-enactment on April 28, it will be very informative.
